Our History
1818 - Crawford County is founded. It is formed out of Harrison, Perry, and Orange counties.
1818 - The town of Leavenworth is founded.
1822 - The county seat is located in Fredonia.
1822 - The Marengo Academy is founded.
1831 - Crawford County's boundaries are officially established.
1839 - The county Poor Farm is established on March 4, 1839. Ann Reid is the first inmate in the Poor Farm in 1844.
1839 - The First newspaper in the county was published at Leavenworth.
1839 - The town of English is established.
1840 - The county seat is moved to Leavenworth.
1854 - Grantsburg is founded.
1873 - Eckerty is founded.
1882 - The Murphy House is built. It is razed in June, 1955.
1883 - S.M. Stewart and his friends find Marengo Cave.
1890 - The entire town of Leavenworth is nearly destroyed by fire.
1894 - The county seat is moved to English.
1910 - The entire town of Marengo is nearly destroyed by fire.
1946 - The county Poor Farm is discontinued on March 5, 1946.
1971 - Crawford County makes national television on Sunday, January 17, 1971 when the biggest moonshine still ever to operate in southern Indiana is discovered.
1974 - The Sorghum Festival begins. It is held annually the third week-end in October.
1979 - On June 9, 1979, the towns of English, Marengo, and Milltown are flooded. On July 26, the towns are flooded again.
1990 - On June 7, 1990, rain caused 5 feet of water to rise in the towns of English and Marengo.
1995 - The entire town of English, Indiana is relocated to higher ground.
